For those of our Guests who wish to know more...

What can be found on the smallest island in Gdańsk?

Amidst the charms of the Old Town, amongst the museums, five-star hotels and historic granaries, lies the Ołowianka 1898 Apartment. This elegant flat is situated in a historic building, and its name is no coincidence.

It was here, between 1897 and 1898, that the German firm Siemens & Halske from Berlin built a power station. The chief designer of the entire complex was Professor Kittler from Darmstadt.

The construction of the former power station on Ołowianka was modelled on 19th-century architecture, with a predominantly Neo-Gothic style. This distinctive building was erected on the plan of a three-nave basilica. The interiors and façade were intended to echo traditional urban architecture, whilst concealing the building’s industrial function. The main complex and the residential buildings, constructed by a Berlin-based firm, were designed to resemble monumental structures in order to blend into Gdańsk’s historic landscape. The entire complex is characterised by richly ornamented façades, typical of public buildings of that era.

Whilst the architects and engineers were in Gdańsk to design the power station, they built residential buildings for their own use, which now house the Ołowianka 1898 Apartment. Red facing brick adorns the façades of the buildings in the complex and draws on Gdańsk’s traditional Hanseatic Gothic style.

The walls and roof of the building housing the flat survived the Second World War without the slightest damage, and their history is recorded in their very pages.

The walls and roof of the building in which the flat is situated survived the Second World War without the slightest damage, and their history is intertwined with that of the German Duchy, the Free City of Gdańsk, the Third Reich and, finally, the Polish state. On the façade of the building, traces of history written in Cyrillic are visible: ‘min niet’. This inscription, left by Red Army sappers after the Second World War, meant ‘no mines’ and informed residents that the building had been checked, the explosives removed, and it was safe to return home.

Ołowianka 1898 is a place with character, situated in one of the most charming parts of historic Gdańsk, offering a whole range of views.

From the apartment’s windows, there is a view of the Main Town, the rooftops of the townhouses, St Mary’s Basilica, the nearby Baltic Philharmonic, the Sołdek ship – which now serves as a museum – and the Motława River, where you can watch ships, boats, yachts and motorboats passing by.

On the other side, the windows look out onto the marina, where yachts are moored, and the modern buildings of Granary Island. From the flat, you can also see the Maritime Museum and the exhibits in front of it, including ship parts and maritime equipment. The AmberSky Ferris wheel is situated approximately 120 metres from the property. Thanks to a footbridge, located about 250 metres away, a stroll to the historic quays, restaurants and the city’s main attractions takes just a few minutes. Despite its location in the very heart of one of Gdańsk’s most popular tourist areas, the area enjoys exceptional peace and quiet. From another window, you can observe a quieter stretch of the river, where swans nest on the quayside every year. During the summer months, a pair of swans lead their cygnets right past the property’s windows, allowing you to watch this unique spectacle without leaving the house.

The apartment’s spacious interior combines elegant, timeless design with elements of historic architecture and the historic character of the location. Stylish details, ample space and comfortable furnishings lend your stay a unique atmosphere, whilst ensuring all the comforts of a modern home.

Guests have access to three separate bedrooms, a spacious living room and a modern kitchenette with a bar area. The kitchen is fully equipped with all essential appliances, including a fridge with a chilled water dispenser and ice maker, a filter coffee machine, a kettle and an elegant and functional set of kitchenware.
The bathroom and additional toilet offer greater freedom and comfort during your stay. Fresh bed linen and towels are provided for guests.

Ołowianka 1898 is the perfect choice for those who want to stay in a place steeped in history, whilst enjoying the comfort and high standard of a modern apartment.

We kindly encourage you to make the booking.
